HMOW Empowers Women and Strengthens Maternal, Child, and Newborn Health in Conflict-Affected Communities

March 2025 – HMOW is proud to announce the successful implementation of a series of life-saving and life-enhancing programs under the DELIVER in HEALTH project. In partnership with Première Urgence Internationale (PUI) and funded by Centre de Crise et de Soutien (CDCS), HMOW has made significant strides in improving healthcare access for displaced and returnee populations in Ninewa, with a special focus on women and children in conflict-affected areas.

Through a comprehensive series of awareness sessions, educational campaigns, and capacity-building efforts, HMOW has impacted many individuals, offering crucial education on topics ranging from mental health to newborn care. The organization's commitment to strengthening maternal, child, and newborn health (MCNH) in the region is a testament to its dedication to improving the lives of vulnerable populations.

Key achievements under the DELIVER in HEALTH project include:

  • Awareness Campaigns: HMOW reached a total of 356 individuals through targeted awareness sessions covering critical topics such as the impact of drug use on health, recognizing signs of suicide, heat convulsions, newborn care, nutrition, and the dangers of traditional remedies such as Sagwa.

  • Capacity Building in Mother-to-Mother (M2M) Support: The organization built the capacity of 63 women in the community to become peer mentors, creating strong support networks and sharing critical health knowledge within their communities.

  • Child Resilience Programs (I CAN): With 52 individuals trained in the I CAN groups, HMOW is fostering resilience among children in conflict-affected areas, ensuring that they have the skills and support needed to cope with the challenges of displacement and trauma.

Expanding Community-Based MCNH Support in Sinjar

As part of the DELIVER in HEALTH project, HMOW is expanding its community-based maternal, child, and newborn health (MCNH) services in Sinjar, offering critical healthcare and mental health support to vulnerable women and children. By providing accessible and comprehensive care, HMOW aims to ensure a healthier future for families in the region.

Building Capacity in Mother-to-Mother Group Facilitation & Child Resilience (I CAN groups)

In collaboration with local communities, HMOW is building the capacity of Mother-to-Mother Group facilitators and empowering women to become champions for their families' health. In addition, through the I CAN groups, children are receiving resilience training that helps them cope with the psychological impact of conflict.

Looking Ahead

HMOW remains committed to improving healthcare delivery, integrating mental health support, and fostering resilience in Ninewa’s most vulnerable communities. The DELIVER in HEALTH project continues to make an impactful difference, providing essential health services, education, and support to displaced and returnee populations.
